Eating, eating and more eating….

It never ends in this house! Someone is always looking for something to eat. They eat three meals a day and snack numerous times. I feel like I am constantly thinking about food! Does anyone else feel this way? I know it is only going to get worse as the kids get older and spend more time in sports. Especially since my husband talks about coming home from football and making a whole loaf of bread into p&j’s for a snack!! HELP! So how do I do this when the budget for food is not unlimited? Meal plans it is!

I make meal plans for every two weeks. My husband gets paid on Tuesdays so I make the meal plan the Monday before and grocery shop on that Tuesday. Not that the food always lasts for two weeks but I try!

So anyways, today is that Monday. I started out by making a list of meals. Sounds easy right? This is the part that I love and hate at the same time. I love to look at Pinterest and get new meal ideas, but I hate the fact that most of the things that I think look yummy don’t pass the inspection by the family. My husband doesn’t like chicken, beans or rice. The kids turn up their noses at most vegetables. The exception is my oldest son, he makes me sooooo happy-loves everything I make and isn’t afraid to try anything. He will make some girl very happy someday.

Next I make the grocery list by checking to see what we already have in the house. This is were you can really save money. Eat out of your cupboards and freezer; know what is in there!!! There are many people out there more organized than me that have lists but I just check in the cupboards, fridge and freezer every two weeks. I don’t keep them super stocked so it isn’t that hard.

After the grocery list is made I try to find coupons for what I have on the list. I also always check Target’s cartwheel app. I find that many of the things I need are on there and I also get 5% off for using the red card. It all helps! We now have a Walmart close so I might have to see if I can save by going there. I don’t love multiple stops though especially when I take all the kids shopping with me. For some reason they don’t love long grocery shopping days, strange hey?

So for the next two weeks this is what we are going to eat.

One Pot Sausage and Mushroom Pasta (Of course no mushrooms-because my family says ewww)

Roast Chicken, potatoes and a vegetable

Chicken pot pie (made with leftovers from the roast chicken)

Chicken fried rice (another meal made from leftover chicken)

Meatballs, mashed potatoes and a vegetable

Sloppy joes and fries

Meatloaf and mashed potatoes and a vegetable

BBQ shredded beef and pork sandwiches, coleslaw and chips (beef and pork because we have a couple beef steaks and a couple of pork steaks left in the freezer)

Ham and scalloped potatoes

Ham and Broccoli Pasta Bake

Hot dogs and macaroni and cheese (this makes the kids happy and me gag)

So that is it. Done- I don’t really plan breakfast and lunches. I rotate through eggs, oatmeal, pancakes and french toast for breakfast. The kids get excited when we have cold cereal. Lunch tends to be leftovers or sandwiches. Snacks are fruit, yogurt, crackers and cheese sticks. I bake sometimes but I usually bake simple things that just require the staples. I buy those when I am running low. I will make a list of what I consider those to be! This is just a basic view of what I do. If you have any questions let me know! Do you meal plan? What do you use?

School time!

It’s that time of year when we have to prepare for school to start! I am having a hard time with it this year because I really don’t feel like we have had much of a summer. I am craving more time at the beach, playing in the sand, running around outside late at night and sunshine with little schedule!

Lydia started volleyball last night and has practice every day! This seriously cuts in to the carefree time! In reality though, I am better when I have a schedule or routine. I can accomplish a lot more. I am doing a course called “Intentional by Grace Unplugged”,( find it at it is helping me see how much time I really waste and what I could get done in a day! Having a routine and making lists are a huge part of this! I am adding writing on this blog to my to-do list daily in hopes it will help me become more consistent here! I am also adding a time to work on my business with Lemongrass Spa to my lists! I have written out my goals for my business and having a time to work on them will help me meet my goals!

Do you follow a schedule or have a routine? What kind of lists do you make?

Did you know?

Did you know that I haven’t posted for a long time? Did you know that I have really good intentions and want to start once again? Did you know that I don’t blame you if you don’t believe me? It’s all good! I will try once again!

Just a little catch up: We are down to 13 chickens running around! Ethan and I butchered the meat birds and they are now in the freezer. Not going to lie, that was one of the hardest things I have ever done! Next year I will not do it unless I get some more help ( and no chopping off heads for me!) We are patiently waiting for eggs to start arriving! Hoping they will lay them in nesting boxes and not all around the yard. They are free to roam all day so it is a possibility!!

We just came back from a week vacation to the U.P. It was a beautiful week for camping and touring the Copper Country! Only one day of rain and we spent that day heading to some museums that I had never seen before.

I love the Calumet Theater and it brought back great memories of being a part of the drama club in high school. The kids weren’t so excited when I told them it was haunted!

Have you ever been to the U.P? Where is your favorite place to go there?

They’re Here!!!

Cheep, cheep, cheep!! That is what we have been hearing for the last 12 hours. The chicks have arrived; we have 27 in all and they can be very vocal! I brought them in the house because of course it decided to snow. I couldn’t bring myself to put them in the garage. Also we have a new dining room table in our garage that needs to finished with a poly coat and I don’t think that would be good for the chicks to breath in. So for now I get to listen to them. They are so cute and my kids just want to hold them all the time.

No Going Back

“There is no going back now!” That is what my husband said after we placed the order for the chickens today. I am excited to announce we will be official chicken owners next week! We bought a few supplies today and now I need to really get serious about researching chickens. I am already dreaming about the fresh eggs and delicious chickens. (We ordered 12 meat birds.) Not so excited about the butchering part but willing to do it.
I kind of feel like we are really settling down now. If you had asked me 10 years ago about owning chickens or thinking about getting any other animals I would have told you that you were crazy. Now I am hoping to expand our little homestead slowly. It will be the convincing my husband that is going to be the hard part. I think that my desire to do all this has come slowly as I read more and more about natural living. I was pretty naive to everything until recently. Now I am making baby steps to a more natural and healthy life for me and my family.
I still feel like I know just a tiny bit about natural living but I am more knowledgeable that I was before. I will continue to learn and change. I don’t even pretend to be an expert on anything but I do know how to use my resources to find things out. I think that is the most important thing. Want to learn with me? Or from my mistakes? Follow along with me on this blog and I will share my experiences with you!

My son has decided that he wants chickens for his birthday! I have been wanting to get some for a while so this makes me excited and a little nervous. Now I actually have to do it. I have been looking online for info about raising chickens for quite a long time and today we checked out a couple of books from the library. It will be sometime before we are enjoying fresh eggs but we are headed in the right direction. I will let you know how it all goes and you can laugh at me or with me! If you have any advice I would love it. Wish us luck.

My sister has inspired me!

My sister Ruthann( has inspired me to get back to blogging! It has been over a year since I posted. Really though it is like I am starting a new blog because I never really did anything back then. Hoping this will help me deal with this insanely long winter we are having! I am done with snow and cold, ready for some warmth and green grass. I did change up some decorations in my house to add some color, but I need more!! Maybe I should head to the flower shop…..
